What is art therapy and how is it different from regular talk therapy?

Talk therapy relies heavily on narrative processing. That works well for some people. For others, especially those with trauma or ADHD, insight does not automatically translate into regulation. Art therapy engages sensory and emotional systems directly. It allows you to map experience rather than only describe it. This often reduces overwhelm and increases integration.

What kind of materials will I need for art therapy?

You don’t need anything fancy. I often suggest having on hand:

  • Paper (any kind)

  • Colored pencils, markers, or crayons

  • Scissors and glue (if possible)

  • A few collage images or magazines

  • Optional: watercolor paints, oil pastels, and clay

I’m not artistic… will this still work for me?

Certainly! Art therapy is not about talent. It is about process. The image functions as data and reveals patterns in emotion, cognition, and behavior. Stick figures, lines, smudges are sufficient. The goal is outward expression, not aesthetics.

Do you see couples as well?

I see both individuals and couples.

Do you see children?

I currently work with adolescents and adults. My current clientele is ages 12 and up. This allows me to focus on providing developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed care for pre-teens, teens, and adults.

What are your qualifications?

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate and Provisional Art Therapist. I am level 1 Gottman trained.
